The Replacements (2000)

replacement

Loosely based on 1987 National Football League (NFL) players’ strike, The Replacements zooms in on the heart-warming comedy of a ragtag team of substitute players, as they struggle to shape up for the upcoming pro-football season. The team, led by Shane Falco (played by Keanu Reeves), is composed of the most unlikely group of young men ever to at foot in a football field. A compulsive gambler, a religious fanatic, an ex-convict, an ex-soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, a Japanese, sumo wrestler and a pair of gangster rappers are just a few of the Sentinel’s eclectic team members.

Underneath the gags and the funny jokes, the movie is a story of rising above expectations and emerging in victory over those people who say that you can’t. Nobody expected the Sentinels to do well, much less go on to win the championship. All of them had the odds stacked up against them from the very beginning, and they had to work twice as hard to prove that they were worth more than they seemed. And at the end of it all, the players were able to return to their lives with their heads held higher, knowing that they finally won their moment of glory.
