This powerful
film tells the life and times of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was a
leader of the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial
rule in India during the first half of the 20th century.
Known throughout
the world as Mahatma Gandhi (“great soul”), he continues to be one of
the most influential and inspirational leaders in history. His advocacy
of non-violence began in South Africa where he encountered personally
the discrimination against Indians. This awakened his sense of social
injustice and kindled the fires of his social activism. He was
successful in shedding light on the growing problem of discrimination
towards Indians is South Africa.
Upon his return
to his native India, he was welcomed like something of a National hero
and was urged to take up the fight against British Imperial rule in the
country. Despite numerous setbacks (he was imprisoned several times)
India gained it’s independence from colonial rule in 1947.
This

1982 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
